Well, its nearly that time of year again and to celebrate another year we are holding a Hifi Hangar Christmas soiree., It will be starting from around midday and going into the evening to merge with our 'Spin What Ya Bring' listening night. During the day we will have minced pies and drinks and in the evening from 6.30pm onwards we will set up a vintage hifi system in one of our listening rooms. All our customers are welcome to come along and bring music to play during the evening. There is a bit of a challenge that if you bring along any Christmas songs it should be something alternative that we would not normally have heard on Christmas. So get your thinking caps on and start searching the archives for any interesting Christmas covers by unlikely artists or lesser known Christmas songs from other countries. So please no Mariah Carry or Cliff Richard! Hope to see you here Steve, Sarah & Bob

It was a cloudy Wednesday when I met Tobias at Southampton airport. During our previous conversation on the telephone Tobias said "you won't be able to miss me, I will be dressed in green, like a Leprechaun!" Well, i thought, this is going to be an interesting day. To say that Tobias is into Transcriptors turntables is an understatement, he knows everything there is to know about them and has a passion for them which comes across as soon as you talk to him. Equipped with his made to measure box in a bag to enable him to take it back on the plane to Amsterdam as hand luggage. He proceeded to dismantle the transcriptors prototype on the table of the Airport coffee shop..... much to the wonder of the nearby coffee drinkers and shop staff. Tobias represents the Transcriptors.NL website, and Amsterdam Transcriptors museum. He also makes speakers c all the 'Asses'.. check the link!! http://www.transcriptors.nl/
The Turntable was identified as one of the first David Gammon Prototype versions, it has three weights, painted wooden plinth, instead of perspex and two brushes, as they hadn't decided where to put the brush!!.. a true, working prototype of probably the most iconic turntable in the world.... We are so happy, that such an enthusiastic collector purchased it from us, and it can be seen in their collection. Click here to see his own write up of the meeting http://www.transcriptors.nl/archief-nl/23-het-oppikken-van-de-pick-up Had a very interesting visit to artist Martin Fuller's studio last night.... He recently sold us his old Quad electrostatics and Technics SL110, and was after some floorstanders. I mentioned to him, that we had some KEF 104/2 speakers in, and he was up for having a listen. We took a drive to Brixton and installed them with his Quad 707/Yamaha C2 and the results were very good. Needless to say, he bought the KEFs, but instead of cash, he gave us the option of a Painting... we chose one, and are very happy with it! Martin is a celebrated surrealist/abstract painter, incorporating bold colour and figures.... His work is showcased at the Dorchester, with an entire floor dedicated to his work. Damien Hurst also has a floor at the Dorchester. He plays mainly Classical and Jazz... VERY LOUD!! his studio is quite big and the KEFs do a sterling job of filling this rather madcap space. The painting we chose was a 'in your face' explosion of earthy colours and with array of faces and a healthy dollop of madness... we like it... a lot. Our next live event here at The Hifi Hangar, come and join us for a festive acoustic gig from 4pm. FREE ENTRY. More info about the acts to follow. Things 'are a changin' here at the Hangar. We have just (nearly) finished our new work shop/repairs centre, thanks to help from my mates boney and Kevin. Boney showed me how to lay the floor and Kevin did a sterling job with the electrics, fitting complete new mains boards, 3 banks of bench switches and strip lighting. Also, the wood working shop's electrics has been sorted by Kev too.. pictures to follow... We would also like to welcome Mike Pointer, the well known south coast valve wizard... when it comes to vintage hifi knowledge, Mike is at the top of the tree, having owned his own hifi shop 'Station Sounds' in Worthing (situated on the Worthing's train station platform!) Mike will be taking on our repairs and modifications, as he has a vast knowledge of vintage British gear and is as passionate as we are. We have a number of Mike's personal collection of restored amplifiers in the shop, which we regularly use, and we are always happy to show off Mikes handy work, which is among the best in his field. |
